Periodontal Therapy

Gum or periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. It can also put you at risk for other health issues. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease have been associated with risk for type 2 diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular issues and even some forms of cancer. If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you should take this seriously and seek professional dental treatment. At Columbia Dental Center, we offer effective periodontal therapy that can stop gum disease in its tracks.

Laser Gum Therapy

When periodontal disease has progressed, the gum tissue can become severely inflamed and pull away from the roots of the teeth. A new technology that we use at Columbia Dental Center to treat periodontitis is laser gum therapy. This method allows us to carefully remove inflamed gum tissue from around the root of the tooth. Once removed, we can begin using scaling and root planing to address the surface of the tooth to promote gum healing.

Scaling and Root Planing

One of the most effective treatments for periodontitis is scaling and root planing. This is a deep cleaning of the tooth roots, removing any bacteria and tartar, then smoothing the root to reduce bacteria buildup in the future. Once smoothed, the gum and tooth roots can reunite to promote gum tissue regeneration as the healing process begins.

When used together, laser gum therapy and the scaling and root planing process can effectively treat periodontitis, even reverse the disease in some cases. Not all dentists offer this advanced combination, but at Columbia Dental Center, we are invested in using the latest dental technology available to help our patients maintain excellent oral health.

There are options to stop periodontitis from progressing and jeopardizing your smile and health. Contact our office today to learn more about our periodontal therapy options. We accept most dental plans, many of which have coverage for treating gum disease.
