The Hidden Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease strikes quickly and silently.

It's a big problem, because gum health is closely linked to overall wellness. With as many as 80% of adults in the U.S. being affected by gum disease, you can't ignore the fact that you might be at risk.

Here are some of the top signs of gum disease that you many not even have realized.

Bad Breath

Foul breath isn't necessarily a sign that you need a piece of gum. A minty candy will only temporarily mask a case of halitosis. Odor can be the result of digestive issues, nasal congestion, diet, or an oral infection.

When gums break down from a bacterial infection, this causes a unique smell that doesn't go away with brushing and rinsing.

Bleeding While Brushing and Flossing

Some are so used to bleeding gums that they think it's normal to see "pink in the sink."

It's actually far from normal.

When gums become inflamed, the tissues swell and thin out. This makes them very sensitive, so they bleed easily when bumped by a brush or floss. Healthy gums won't react to brushing and flossing that way.

Periodontal Attachment Loss

One last definitive sign of gum disease is something that can only be measured in a dental clinic.

When your gums and the ligaments under them start to break down from infection, the attachment loss can be detected on x-rays and with periodontal probes.

Have you ever noticed or been told that you have any of these issues?
